The 2024 F5J Glider Contest schedule is out. See the Soaring Contests page for the dates and F5J familiarization tips. We held a runway repair work day on Sat, 4-7-2024, and 11 members and non members showed up to help. Layne was a hero, bringing a big yard tractor with a blade and a leveling drag. With that, he did a partial fill in the pesky low swale in the the runway. It’s still there, but the grading made it much shallower. The moist dirt was sticking badly to the big concrete roller, but after many passes with the “drag”, the dirt fluffed up and dried, enabling a few sucessful passes with the concrete roller. The runway is now back down, despite the wind that caught the runway like a sail, almost sending a few flying without remote ID! We also got a new safety fence installed as the sun failed. This was a MASSIVE effort, so many thanks to all! See a few pictures below. The Minnesota Afterburners Club holds “Club Night” every Tuesday afternoon-evening, weather permitting. Show up and fly anything and everything from foamies to jets. We do this so folks can plan on people being at the field on a particular day without having to organize a meet by texting, etc. This ensures that no one feels left out and promotes fellowship. New or prospective members who wish to check out the field are encouraged to use that opportunity to meet some of us. Bring a plane to try out the runway. If you like it, you can join on the “Membership” page on this website. Also, for folks who can’t make it during the week, we hold a regular Fly-In on the 3rd Saturday of every month, all day and into the evening. There are no organized events at the Fly-In, just show up and have fun. See you then! We are also looking at having an Open House day of flying in 2024. Date to be set, along with a rain date. This Open House is open to everyone, you don’t have to be a member. Get to know the field and the members to consider joining the club. Stay tuned. Club meetings are held via Zoom when necessary. An email will be sent out ahead of a meeting. We leave time for ‘Show n Tell’ of member projects in the last half of the meetings. We also would like to feature a member’s short tip or technique tutorial at that time. To attend, email an officer to get the Zoom link. Check out the Location page for directions to our field.
